A Pastor, relative of one of my friends, had requested me to paint three panels of frescos depicting the second coming of Christ as the center theme for a newly built ‘Vision’ Church.
Though it was an exciting task, I had reservation in taking up the task due to my age and the site distance constraints. But offered to do the paintings digitally and give them as canvas digital prints instead of painting at site in oil. The size being 4’x 6′.
The center panel containing the image of Christ is given below.
The side panels were, with images of Angels with trumpets.
Dying Christ- Soft pastel studies

During my Air Force days, I used to draw or paint pictures of Christ on the cross on every Good Friday. I have none of them in my archive. But there are a few which I had painted later while experimenting with soft Pastes.

Perfection is far off in my works, but the time spent was soul filling.
Scared Image of Christ

A few years back, a day before the Holy week, our parish priest walked into my house and placed a request.
He wanted a painting of the scared image of the face of Christ that was imprinted on the veil of Veronica. This was to be used in our church during the Good Friday service.
This painting I did on linen cloth with oil color in one day. Every year, this image is being used during Good Friday service in our parish.

After trying the Tribal woman on a coarse sand paper, I wanted to try on something smoother and yet with some teeth to take down the pastel colors.
This was done on an emery paper which is used for polishing metallic surfaces. Nice surface for pastels, but the size is a constraint. It is usually available in size 8″ x 10″
I want my blog keep ticking

Sure it has been ages since I posted anything on my blog. Though I had been busy on and off with my art works, I simply did not post anything. I am unable to find a single reason. Well now I have lined up with some thing new and old to keep this page ticking.
As I said before, I was trying my hand with a medium which was fascinating and new to me. That is the Soft pastel medium. Slowly and steadily I guess that I am getting hold of that medium. Nevertheless, each painting I was trying, I thoroughly enjoyed doing it.
I would not say that this hand made paper card was an ideal base for soft pastel. But I will be trying other types of hand made paper.

After a couple of failure attempts in finding a base with teeth(!) I tried this one from a pen sketch which I drew long ago, that can be found elsewhere in this blog.
Yes, I tried this on a very coarse sand paper! Size 8.5″x11″
My tryst with pastels

I have been always fascinated with paintings made by great artists with soft pastel medium. Decades ago, I could not find the right materials at the local market. Now there are aplenty. So I have started to try my hand at it. It had been a while since I tried experimenting, yet I am yet to find the right base to paint on. Another thing I find difficulty is in choosing the size of the painting since most of the blending has to be done with fingers.
Here I post my first attempt.
It was a great experience drawing this on a normal drawing sheet. I found it a bit easy, may be due to the level of motivation. The reference was a calendar art by John Walter.
But my next attempts were disappointing.

When I was just going through my numerous folders containing my old sketches and paintings, it was a pleasant surprise when I found this one! Painted sometime in 1985, it formed a group of water color paintings; size 5″x7″ that I painted with Greeting card concept. Looking at this now, I find this has pleasing and soothing color.

This painting which I did today was painted in water color on a cream color tinted handmade card sheet. The base was good for water color and as I made the drawing almost 9″x14″, it was a nice experience to paint with free brush strokes.

My 100th post! It is once again Mary with Baby Jesus in sweet slumber sleep. Painted this in water color today. I can not stick with just one style of painting. I want to experiment and keep trying to paint in different styles
